Edmodo

Quiz: The quiz function allows teachers to create or upload quizzes for students to take on Edmodo. Quizzes can be multiple choice, short answer, true or false, fill in the blank, or matching.

Snapshot: Teachers can use snapshot to give students a brief quiz about a lesson that was taught. Teachers input the grade level and particular standards covered and Edmodo develops a quiz based on that information.

Assignment: Here teachers can upload or create assignments. The assignments are given a due date and teachers can decide if students will be able to turn in their assignment after the due date has passed.

Note: Teachers can send notes to groups, individual students, or even other teachers.

Poll: This function allows teachers to create polls for students to vote on. There are options for two inputs and the function will keep track of how many votes each input has.

            For an ELA teacher, I believe the greatest benefit of using Edmodo is creating a centralized area for students to discuss and submit work. For example, let’s say a class is required to read one chapter of a novel a week. By Wednesday, a teacher can require that students post their thoughts about the chapter on Edmodo and comment on their peers thoughts as well. By Thursday or Friday, students are required to complete the chapter quiz on Edmodo. Using Edmodo in this manner simulates the typical classroom discussion, but it also has the added benefit of allowing every student’s voice to be heard. Some students who are shy may never raise their hand in class to give their opinion. However, these shy students may feel more comfortable expressing their opinion on Edmodo when they have time to collect their thoughts without the pressure of speaking in class.
